Tenerife’s time has come in films industry
Tenerife gets into movies again, this time to be the location of the movie “Una hora más en Canarias”, that will be shown in the “Festival de Cine de Málaga” (Malaga’s Film Festival) where it will compete in the official selection of this Film Festival that will take place from 17th to 24th of April.
The film, starring Angie Cepeda, Juana Acosta, and Quim Gutierrez, written and directed by David Serrano, was shot in about 30 locations distributed in different municipalities of the island such as Garachico, Buenavista del Norte, Icod de los Vinos and La Laguna, during June 2009.
Having a four million euros budget, this is the third Serrano’s film, after the success of “Días de Fútbol” in 2002, and “Días de Cine” in 2006. Besides, it is his fourth script after the two mentioned films and “El otro lado de la cama” in 2001, and “Los dos lados de la cama” in 2005.
The reason for the director to choose Tenerife as location for his movie is his desire to pay tribute to “love and luxury” films. “I wanted this movie to be a beautiful, foolish, and witty people one, who visit paradisiacal beaches, wonderful places, and wears even more wonderful garments, being involved into any kind of trouble to reach what is, undoubtedly, the most important thing in life: love”, explained Serrano.
The story revolves around a love triangle leaded by the Colombian actress Angie Cepeda. She plays the part of Claudia, a young woman who lives in harmony working in her bar while she keeps a double love life, having her handsome husband that she loves, her handsome son that she also loves, and her even more handsome lover that she loves even more. She lives a perfect life, or that seems so, until her lover, Pablo, whose character is played by Quim Gutiérrez, falls in love with another woman and decides to finish their relationship. She is not willing to let him leave so easily, and for that reason, she creates a plan to seduce him. The movie shows the adventures and bloody battle between these selfish, liars, and absolutely charming women that struggle to keep with the suitor. The story is wrapped into a sophisticated comedy, not common in Spanish films, spiced with small musical numbers full of fantasy and humour.
Alberto San Juan (Goya Prize 2008 for best actor), the Argentinean actor Eduardo Blanco, Kiti Manver (from “Loa abrazos rotos”), Juana Acosta, Isabel Ordáz, and Miren Ibarguren (from “Escenas del matrimonio”) complete the cast.
The shooting of the movie in the island left incomes around 750,000 euros, according to estimations made by the Tenerife Council. It also provided a chance to near 700 locals from 19 to 70 years old to appear as extras in the movie.
To accomplish the glamorous atmosphere the director wanted, the film counted with a renown technical team including the choreographer Richard Siegal, who was the art director of The Bakery Paris – Berlin, and William Forsythe member of the Frankfurt ballet; the director of photography Carlos Ferro; the art director and costume designer Paco Delgado (from “The Oxford murders” and “La mala educación”), and the make-up in charge of Gregorio Ros (winner of several Goya prizes and the Ricardo Franco award for his career in the past Malaga’s Film Festival).
The visual effects of the film have color as centrepiece to create a fantasy world where anything is possible, from people flying when falls in love to everybody singing in the streets when they are happy. “This movie is not a musical one but it was shot as it was”, David Serrano explained.
The movie, produced by “Telespan 2000” in association with “La Zona Films”, and in co-production with the Colombian production company “Dynamo Capital y Sogecable”, had a budget of more than four million euros. Other institutions that collaborated with this film were “Telvisión Española”, “Canal Plus”, the Canarias Government Tourism Council, the Insualr Council of Tenerife, and “Turismo de Tenerife”. The distribution is in charge of “Vértice 360º” group, leader in the Spanish market with movies such as Traffic, Gangs of New York, and Crash.
“Una hora más en Canarias” will compete in the official selection of one of the most important film festivals in Spain which is the Malaga’s Film Festival, together with other twelve films: “Io, Don Giovanni”; “Que se mueran los feos”, “Planes para mañana”, “Propios y Extraños”, “Bon Appétit”, “El idioma imposible”, “El dios de madera”, “La vida empieza hoy”, “Rabia”, “Héroes”, “Circuit” and “Habitación en Roma”.
After this first test with the jury, the movie by David Serrano will be on cinemas this summer for the audience. According to the producers, the premiere on cinemas is scheduled for July, when the audience will give the final judgment about this film.
