Beaches

September 7th, 2010

There are four beaches in Las Americas, the main one, Playa de Las Americas, Playa de Troya, Playa de las Cuevitas and Playa del Bobo.  All of these beaches are made up of a mixture of imported sand from the Sahara desert, and the natural black volcanic sand of the island.  By mixing the sand, the colouration of it has lightened and is not so hot on the feet, whilst still keeping its authenticity.

Playa De Las Americas is divided into two halves, one half has been left in its natural state and is made up of rocks and pebbles, this part of the beach has become very popular for surfers.  It also has a small kiosk on it where you can rent surfboards, or just chill there watching the surfers whilst enjoying a drink.  The other half has been reconstructed with the mixed sand as mentioned; it has a wave breaker, so is a lot gentler to have a swim in.  This area of the beach also contains the usual amenities such as sun beds, parasols, showers, and toilets.  In 1998 this beach was awarded with the Blue Flag Beach Award, it complies with European Standards of cleanliness and facilities.

Playa de Troya and Playa de las Cuevitas are also man-made beaches with a mixture of sand, giving them a golden kiss.  Playa de Troya has a mixture of sports to indulge in including Pedalos, Jet Ski´s, Parascending, Banana Boat and more.  Both of the beaches have sun beds, parasols, showers, and toilets that are all well kept.

Playa del Bobo follows the form of the other 3 beaches, but is a lot smaller and more intimate.  This beach is not short of amenities; although it has no water sports and hence is the quietest of the four.

From the beaches in Las Americas you can appreciate spectacular views of the mountains and also of La Gomera, another of the Canary Islands, across the water.  The short finned pilot whales live in between here and La Gomera all year round and we are very lucky in Tenerife to be one of only 3 places in the world where these spectacular creatures can be seen.  There is no better way to see them than on a trip on Eden Catamaran.
